Why an uneven bite matters to your gums
Every time you bite, chew, or swallow, your teeth meet with real force. When that force is distributed evenly, teeth handle it easily. But when certain teeth hit early or harder than the rest, because of shifting, worn or new dental work, grinding, or tooth loss, those teeth take a beating they weren't designed for.
For patients with periodontal disease, this matters even more. Teeth already weakened by bone loss are especially vulnerable to excess bite force: the trauma can accelerate loosening and make it harder for treated gums and bone to heal. That's why bite evaluation is part of thorough periodontal care.
A bite adjustment (occlusal adjustment) rebalances how your teeth meet, so no single tooth carries more than its share.

How an unbalanced bite shows itself
Loose or shifting teeth
Excess force can loosen teeth, especially those already affected by bone loss.
Sensitivity or soreness
A tooth that's tender when chewing, or newly sensitive, may be taking too much force.
Wear, chips & fractures
Flattened, chipped, or cracked teeth, and repeatedly broken fillings, point to concentrated forces.
Jaw or muscle discomfort
Morning jaw soreness or tired chewing muscles often accompany grinding on an uneven bite.
Small, precise changes bring big relief
A bite adjustment is conservative and comfortable. Using thin marking paper, we map exactly where your teeth touch first and hardest as you bite and slide your jaw. The high spots are then gently and precisely reshaped, usually a fraction of a millimeter of enamel, until the force spreads evenly across your teeth.
Most adjustments require no anesthetic at all, and many patients notice the difference immediately: teeth meet "the way they're supposed to" again.
