How your consultation works
Your first visit is designed to diagnose the problem and plan the right periodontal or implant care. It is different from a routine dental checkup or cleaning.
- Check-in: If you complete your new-patient forms at home, check-in takes only a few minutes. We will also review any referral information or records your dentist sent ahead.
- Specialist exam and imaging: Your periodontist will review your medical and dental history and examine your gums, teeth, bite, bone, and oral tissues. We will review existing X-rays and take additional or 3D images when needed.
- Clear answers: We will explain what we found, discuss the treatment choices that fit your health and goals, and answer every question you have, including comfort and sedation options.
- Costs and scheduling: Before you leave, you will understand the recommended next step and receive a clear estimate. Most treatment is scheduled for a separate visit; if same-day care is appropriate, we will discuss it with you first.
You will never be pressured to decide on the spot. The goal of the consultation is to give you a diagnosis, a plan, and the information you need to make a confident choice.
What to bring
- Your completed new-patient forms
- Your referral slip and recent X-rays, if you have them. If you do not, your dental office can send records to us and we can take any imaging we need.
- A current list of medications, including doses
- Your dental insurance card and a photo ID
- A parent or legal guardian if the patient is under 18
- Your questions. Write them down so we can make sure every one is answered.
You do not need to track down a referral or X-rays before calling us. Many patients arrive with records from their dentist and many do not; either way, we will help coordinate what is needed.
Before treatment is scheduled
Do I need a referral?
No. Many patients are referred by their dentist, but you can request a consultation directly at any of our five offices.
Will treatment happen at my first visit?
Usually, your first appointment is for examination and planning. If straightforward same-day care is clinically appropriate, we will explain it and confirm that you are comfortable before proceeding.
What if my treatment uses sedation?
Fasting and driver requirements apply to a sedated treatment visit, not a standard consultation. Follow the instructions our team provides and review our surgical instructions before your procedure.
How will I know the cost?
